There are few things as rewarding as positively influencing the lives of young people by motivating and mentoring them to become their best selves. Here are nine of the most compelling reasons to become a teacher, based on the perspectives of current educators.
1. Inspire the following generation.
By becoming a teacher, you will obtain a level of job satisfaction that is rare. Teachers have arguably the greatest influence on a child’s life, second only to parents. The visible results you’ll see in your students are certain to fill you with pride!
2. A genuine vocation
Similar to physicians, nurses, and veterinarians, teaching is more than a job. It is a true profession. The rewarding nature of teaching gives teachers a level of job satisfaction unmatched by most professions.
3. A strong interest in the subject
Few people can utilize their passion in their occupation. Teachers have the opportunity to instill this enthusiasm in their students every day.
4. A distinct career path
If you wish to advance in your career, teaching provides a clear path to do so. From department heads to principals, there are ample opportunities for advancement.
5. Employee benefits
A teaching career provides lucrative compensation packages. In Scotland, teachers in their probationary year receive a starting salary of £27,498*. If secondary teachers choose to complete their probationary year anywhere in Scotland, they receive an additional £8,000, while primary teachers receive an additional £6,000.
In the first five years following full registration, this figure increases from £32,994 to £41,412*. In Scotland’s largest schools, principals can also earn up to £98,808*.

6. International opportunities
The majority of countries place a high value on Scottish teacher training, and your degree opens doors to travel the globe. From Asia to North America, Australia to the Middle East, there are so many opportunities available to graduates, especially after gaining a few years of experience.
7. Job safety
In contrast to the majority of the private sector, teaching offers excellent job security! After graduating, Scottish students are also guaranteed a one-year position in a Scottish school.
8. Excellent for families
Teaching is a unique profession in multiple ways. If you have or plan to start a family, you’ll spend the majority of your holidays with your children – a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together!
9. Remain a lifelong student
Nothing encourages you to continue to learn about a subject more than teaching it! Children are inquisitive and frequently ask questions you have never considered. This enables you to continually investigate new discoveries and technologies to introduce to your students.
